How to Switch to a Plant Based Diet in 5 Easy Steps

Think switching to a plant based diet is hard? How could you possibly give up meat, dairy, and produce and never look back? These five steps will show you that switching isn’t as hard as you think. Follow these five steps and you will be surprised at how easy it can be!

1. Educate yourself on the benefits of a plant based diet

Understanding why a plant based diet is beneficial to you will be your foundation. It will be difficult to stick with this change if you don’t know why many scientists, doctors, and health organizations recommend eating a plant based diet. If you are not sure where to look to learn more about plant based diets, check out the resources provided for you in my last post.

2. Find your “why”

After learning more about the positive benefits of a plant based diet, hopefully your find your “why”. It may be for health reasons, animal rights, or environmental concerns (or a combination of all three). Having a strong reason to fall back on as to why you switched to a plant based diet is essential. When you are having a bad day or maybe craving meat, this “why” will help power you through. Furthermore, your “why” will probably change over time. There is nothing wrong with a change in motivation and inspiration. As long as you have a clear understanding of your “why” that you can constantly refer back to.

3. Start Slowly

People seem to believe you have to jump headfirst into switching to a plant based diet. This switch is a huge commitment and lifestyle change. When you change something drastically in your life, you typically start slowly and work your way into it. Transitioning to a plant based diet is no different. When starting out, cut meat out of your diet for only two or three days a week. Or maybe only have one meal a day that contains animal products. There is no rush as this is something you will hopefully adopt for the rest of your life. Even when you start slowly, chances are you will see positive benefits in a very short amount of time.

4. Don’t Let Slip-Ups Discourage You

Nobody is perfect. Maybe you are at a barbecue and cant resist the smell of that grilled cheeseburger or hot dog. So what you had a minor setback? Its not the end of the world. However, don’t let one minor slip up build on itself. Just because you had a rough day or had a cheat meal doesn’t mean you are instantly unhealthy or going to die. But if you decide to give up eating a plant based diet just because of one bad day, then that can be troublesome. The snowball effect can be powerful. If you slip up, just tell yourself you will bounce back and make sure to keep a positive attitude. Fall back on the “why” statement and don’t be too hard on yourself!

5. Get Connected!

Whether its online (maybe here on Plant Based Victory) or at your local farmers market or vegan food fest, find a community! Surrounding yourself with like minded people will help you fall in love with eating a plant based diet and your choice to live a healthy lifestyle. Look up local farmers markets in your area or if there is some kind of vegan food fest around you and go check it out. You will find that everyone there is so friendly and you will probably discover new foods and recipes that you will love. Or you don’t even need to leave the house. There are tons of online blogs and websites that promote healthy living. These websites will also have members that comment and are looking to meet others like them. Don’t be afraid to reach out and meet new people! It makes a world of difference in your journey to transitioning to a plant based diet.
